Renewable Energy

CADFEM Ireland offer comprehensive simulation expertise and technologies for the renewable energy market.  The broad portfolio of ANSYS products, and extensive expertise of our team, means we can leverage tailor made solutions for every area of the industry.

We help drive innovation and clean solutions for our future.

Wind farm simulation with Windmodeller, a customised front end for ANSYS-CFX, means that wind flows over complex terrains can be assessed a lot more effectively and efficiently for wind farm site assessments.

CADFEM UK and Ireland uses and distributes Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Explicit Dynamics and Electromagnetics software from ANSYS.

The software can be used in the design  and analysis of:

  • larger, lightweight turbines that capture more wind
  • higher, lightweight towers that reach windier heights
  • less expensive and lighter-weight, integrated drive-trains
  • single-stage gearboxes coupled to permanent magnet generators (PMGs)
  • better blade, nacelle, and rotor aerodynamics
  • site-specific configurations of turbines in wind farms.

Fluid-structure interaction on turbine blades. Comprehensive multiphysics technology from ANSYS enables the boundaries of turbine technology to be pushed back by coupling simulations between structural dynamics and aerodynamics of the blades, heat transfer and electromagnetic losses in electrical equipment, and the response of offshore wind turbines to hydrodynamic waves. Engineered scalability accelerates analyses, and an adaptive architecture enables integration with industry-specific design and analysis tools such as Flex 5.

Marine Renewable Energy

CADFEM applies the ANSYS AQWA suite of integrated modules which addresses the vast majority of analysis requirements associated with the hydrodynamic assessment of all types of offshore/marine structures

Wave Energy Devices:

  • mooring systems
  • wave energy-mechanical energy coupling
  • random wave and survival wave conditions
  • output prediction

Tidal Energy Devices:

  • fluid behavior
  • body forces
  • vortex effects
  • structural loading and assessment

AQWA can take account of hydrodynamic interaction between adjacent structures. Thus the motions of one structure can affect the motions of another. The structures can be articulated, connected by cables or independent.A typical application would be shielding effects. Note that hydrodynamic interaction with forward speed is currently not available.

Solar Energy

ANSYS engineering simulation for solar energy solutions are used throughout the solar energy industry to simulate material processing, manufacturing, panel and component installation across various solar energy technologies, including Si-based systems, CdTe thin films, CIG systems, ribbons, glass substrate deposition technologies and edge-defined growth (EDG) solar cells.

CFD for solar energy, structural mechanics software and solar energy system design software are part of ANSYS engineering simulation for solar energy that supports solar engineers as they seek to reduce manufacturing costs, improve stability and storage
capacities, and take energy efficiency to new limits.
